“Hanbok Culture Week 2022”, a nationwide festival held every October since 2018 to spread the beauty and history of Korean traditional clothing, was held for seven days starting Monday. This year’s edition is set to be staged well beyond Seoul, with a series of hanbok-related events simultaneously launching in 36 major cities in 17 countries.

Organized by the Korea Craft and Design Foundation (KCDF), this year’s festival will see South Korea’s Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) in July introduce cultural practices related to traditional clothing known as ‘hanbok lifestyle’ into the country’s intangible culture. It will be held after it is designated as a heritage. .

Events in Seoul will mainly take place at HiKR Ground, a hall for promoting Korean popular culture with augmented reality technology, located near Cheonggyecheon in the heart of Seoul.

The building currently has some special Hanbok-themed exhibits. Clothing from Netflix’s zombie period drama ‘Kingdom’ set in the mid-Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), traditional children’s clothing created by famous hanbok designer Kim In-ja, produced by Korea’s first hanbok manufacturer Dolls wearing handmade hanbok are on display. Lee Chan-woo, a generational art toy designer who goes by the alias of Coolrain.

Arrive at the K-POP studio on the second floor of the hall where you can dress up in Hanbok and shoot your own music video. The 5th floor lounge offers Korean knotted bracelet and keychain craft sessions. These can be worn as adornments along with traditional clothing.

On Friday, scholars, designers and performers who have contributed to the promotion of the country’s national costumes will be honored at an awards ceremony – Gachon University professor Cho Hyo-sook, CEO of modern hanbok brand Leesle Hwang Yi-seul, trot singer Song Ga-in and K-POP girl group OH MY GIRL.

The ceremony will be followed by an outdoor hanbok fashion show and K-pop concert, featuring soloist Ha:tfelt, a former member of the Dynamic Duo and girl group Wonder Girls.

In addition to Seoul, around 20 cities around the world will celebrate Hanbok Culture Week 2022 with their own versions of fashion shows, performances, screenings and exhibitions. These include Seattle, Vancouver, New Delhi, London, Sao Paulo, Budapest and Abu Dhabi.
