High-profile in-house enterprise messenger service

Samsung Group executives use ‘Samsung Knox’, an internal mobile platform for internal communication.

With the closure of the KakaoTalk messenger service causing nationwide communication outages, there has been a lot of interest in the in-house messenger programs used by major South Korean corporate groups such as Samsung for internal communications.

Major corporate groups in South Korea use their own internal messengers for security and convenience. For example, Samsung Group uses ‘Samsung Knox’, SK Group uses ‘Nateon’, Hyundai Motor Group uses ‘Autoway M+’, and LG Group uses ‘M Messenger’.

About 270,000 Samsung Group officials, including Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, use Samsung Knox. This is a proprietary security and management framework that comes pre-installed on most Samsung mobile devices. Its primary purpose is to provide organizations with a toolset for managing work devices such as employee mobile phones and interactive his kiosks. For security reasons, Knox Portal users cannot save conversations or capture screens. You can also use secret chat rooms.

In 2010, SK Group launched an intranet-integrated group portal and integrated its internal messenger into ‘Nate On’. About 120,000 employees of SK Group are using Nate On. Integrate SK’s online communication methods into one to make internal communication more efficient. NateOn is optimized for business by linking with internal organization charts and email accounts. Not only is it more convenient, but it is also more secure.

About 180,000 Hyundai Motor Group employees also use the internal messenger Autoway M+. Hyundai Motor Group also operates a business collaboration platform, MS Teams.

LG Group has been using M Messenger since 2018. All data sent and received through M Messenger is encrypted, and all personal information data is also encrypted. In particular, M Messenger has strong security thanks to password encryption, phone DB encryption and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) application. You can lock your M Messenger account and delete data when your smartphone is lost. Equipped with features such as capture prevention and PC-controlled remote logout.

POSCO Group uses “post-talk” for both one-on-one and group communication, internal document sharing, and video conferencing. It is compatible with both PC and mobile phones.

Some Korean business groups use Microsoft’s Skype Messenger. Hyundai Heavy Industries Group uses Skype for business. Since it is linked with the in-house email system (Outlook), you can easily share emails and register schedules. We also took into account that Skype Messenger allows you to view your company’s org chart and easily search for specific teams and their contact information. No data is stored in external clouds, which greatly improves security.

Hanwha Group has also used Skype for Business as a common internal messenger since the early 2000s. We manage servers at the data center of Hanwha Group.

An official from the South Korean business community said, “Most Korean companies use internal messengers for safety and convenience.” When KakaoTalk crashed, there was no damage.
