John Boyne chooses a touchstone

featured image

John Boyne, 51, grew up in Sandyford, Dublin. In 2000, his The Thief of Time, one of his 21 published books, hit bookshelves. The film adaptation of his award-winning novel The Boy in the Striped Pajamas was released in 2008. In 2019, his home in Rathfurnham, Dublin, won Celebrity Home of the Year, his “proudest achievement to date.” His latest young adult novel, All The Broken Places, is published by Doubleday.

I started reading John Irving in my mid-teens. I loved his almost Dickensian approach, starting with the boy’s birth and following his life.

I could relate to many of the characters in his books. He wrote a lot about “sexual nonconformity”. As a teenager, I felt like a sexual misfit.

The Cider House Rules are about abortion, so they have a lot of political edge, but John is a staunch supporter of abortion rights, but he creates a Homer Wells central figure who doesn’t share the same sentiments. I do. It is interesting for writers to challenge themselves. That was the beginning of my obsession with John Irving novels.

back and forth

LP Hartley’s Go-Between is probably my favorite novel. This is the old man’s story. He looks back to his 12-year-old moment.

He went to a fashionable friend’s house during the summer. He falls in love with his friend’s sister. It is his first experience of crush, lust and romance. he thinks she has a crush on him.

In fact, she uses him as an intermediary, sending letters to neighboring farmers. Discovery of this scars his life.

This is a wonderful novel about first love and heartbreak that can never be recovered. I’ve written quite a few novels, novels that reflect on moments when older storytellers negatively impacted their future. This is a theme heavily influenced by The Go-Between.

Kate Bush

My favorite musician since I was 13 is Kate Bush. I’ve been a Kate Bush obsession for almost my entire life.

So does my friend David Mitchell. Compete to see who is the best fan.

I know her album inside out. she is a narrator She creates characters that could be characters in a novel. She is inventive in her talent as a musician and her control over her work.

She apparently wrote classic songs like The Man With the Child in His Eyes when she was 13.

She performed in London eight years ago. She hadn’t given a concert since her 1979. I was in the second row.

To me she looked almost like a mythical figure – someone other than this, and she was on stage in front of me. It was one of the best nights of my life with her.

John Banville

In John Banville’s novels, we see two things.

One is to be amazed by the writing. He writes beautifully and, like poetry, comes up with unique words and images that move you.

Second, he’s a great storyteller. He writes novels about characters who want their life experiences to be resolved in some way and want to know what will happen to them.

My favorite novel of his is Ancient Light. A love story between a younger boy and an older woman.

Again, the themes of the novel that I enjoy are the loss of innocence, heartbreak, and the damage that the experience of first love can do to a young person.

Folio Society

The Folio Society has been operating for about a century. Based in London. They produce beautifully illustrated editions of classic novels in slipcases.

For example, you want to read Anna Karenina. Buy the Foley Society Edition. The book will be extraordinary: paper, type, illustrations. It enhances the whole reading experience.

They make a new set of books two or three times a year. I’ve been obsessed with collecting them for years. i have never read that. That’s a beautiful way to read it.

fame

When I was a kid, my favorite TV show was Fame. Around the age of 10, I was obsessed with Fame. I had all the records and posters.

My favorite character was Danny, an aspiring comedian. It was a great show.

West Wing

Martin Sheen of the West Wing.
Martin Sheen of the West Wing.

My favorite TV show is The West Wing. I could quote the episode – I’ve seen them many times.

It’s a view I’m comfortable with now – I know the characters very well. Martin Sheen is the best as the president.

Writing is great. I love American political programs and movies, and I can learn about American politics and its curiosity, and the dynamics between Republicans and Democrats.

It is from the early 2000s and does not reflect the current madness of American politics. It’s like, in the words of George Bush Sr., reminiscent of “a kinder, gentler country.”

woody allen

My favorite movie director is Woody Allen. I always loved his movies. Perhaps no other filmmaker is as prolific.

Even his not-so-good movies are better than most people’s movies, but his great movies are better than ever. They evoke human experience.

He’s written amazing female characters that you don’t see very often in movies. The reason so many actresses have won Oscars for appearing in his movies is because he plays great roles. You can watch his movies over and over again and still find something new.

Talented Mr. Ripley

My favorite movie is Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, based on the first of Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley novels.

I love antiheroes, the confused sexuality of Tom Ripley and Dickie Greenleaf. The beauty of the Italian Riviera in the 1950s. It’s a great movie to watch.

Incredibly tense, Matt Damon’s performance as Tom Ripley is at times heartbreaking and at times chilling. Tom Ripley is a very charming character.

Steve Karcheff

i love australia I go every year. Steve Kalcev is a Macedonian-born Australian artist. He passed away last year. I have three of his paintings in my house.

He creates these beautiful, large, impressionist paintings that are very tactile. I have all these chips and small cuts.

The image is almost off canvas. They reflect a lot of Aboriginal influences. They become very interesting to stare at.

You can always see different things in them. You can lose yourself in hypnosis.
