Dennis Buckley Neighborhood Extra
At the touch of a big computer screen, Yankee Hill Village residents enjoy an extrasensory experience that covers a wide range of personal needs and interests.
From 1940s big band melodies to worship services of various denominations, a new technology called iN2L is connecting people, connecting seniors with their interests and making them happen. You can also share conversations, experiences, learning and fun with each other, caregivers and family members.
The new technology was deployed at Yankee Hill Village in the Immanuel community at 8401 S. 33rd St in late August. 2018.
“IN2L is designed to appeal to our memory care space, reminding us of happy times and drawing us into happy memories,” said Ryan. (IN2L stands for It’s Never Too Late.)

“Google Within”
“I call it ‘Google Within’. It’s very helpful because it has good information and literally thousands of options to choose from,” said 19 of Retired Community (formerly Clark Jerry Retired Community). Life Enhancement Supervisor Beth Alberts, an employee of the year, said. .
“Exercises, travelogues, games, puzzles, religion, anything that provides an interactive experience,” says Alberts. For example, if you click on the “Relax” box, one of the options that pop up for him will be “Aquarium”. Click on the aquarium and move your finger across the screen as if bathed in bubbles and delighted with the sound effects.
“Relaxation is something we all value, but it’s especially important among residents of memory support communities,” says Alberts.
Music is another popular option chosen among iN2L participants. With this technology, karaoke choirs have become quite a hit. “This will play a selection of music that reminds residents of special times in their lives,” said Alberts. “This technology provides meaningful engagements that lead to happier, healthier lives.”
Resident families can also benefit from new technology through video chat, messaging and being able to watch their loved ones having a good time.
All staff trained
All 83 Yankee Hill Village employees were trained to make the experience enjoyable for residents. The arrival of iN2L is a welcome addition and will ease the transition after the lifestyle restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic, said Life Enrichment Coordinator Cathy Nannen.
“This identified an individual’s interests and was very helpful after the challenges presented by COVID-19,” Nannen said. “Interactive games are especially welcome in the late afternoon when confusion and anxiety are more common in the memory care community.”
