Cristiano Ronaldo has been ruled out of the Manchester United squad ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea and told to train away from the team until after the match.

United manager Eric ten Hag acted swiftly after Ronaldo (an unused substitute) made his way to the dressing room before the end of Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Tottenham.

Ronaldo has suggested that “the heat of the moment” came through to him when he decided to leave the field.

• Steven Gerrard has stepped down as manager of Premier League club Aston Villa after less than a year.

NBA: Tony Brown, who officiated more than 1,100 NBA games for nearly 20 years, has died after a battle with pancreatic cancer, his family has announced. he was 55 years old.

Brown was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in April 2021 and recovered enough to return to work at the NBA Replay Center last season. According to his family, he recently entered hospice care in Atlanta.
