Guwahati: There is considerable pressure on border infrastructure in terms of connectivity and habitat.
Construction of settlements and other infrastructure is accelerating following an Indigenous Peoples Research and Development Programme, in which a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Eastern Army Command and IIT Guwahati.
The MoU, signed in July this year, includes the development of cost-effective and sustainable defense infrastructure for the Army.
IIT-Guwahati has built and unveiled a 3D printed sentinel base for the Indian Army on October 6th.
The region’s first 3D printed sentinel post is modular and can be transported and assembled on site.
A first-of-its-kind integrated project originally conceived in West Arunachal Pradesh
November 2021.
Integrated project with space, required troop comforts and weather in mind
protection, water and other facilities, power requirements, safety and connectivity.
This model post was conceptualized as a modern, self-sustaining high-tech project with hybrid renewable energy sources.

There were many challenges, such as connecting to remote locations. Problems such as transportation of construction materials, shortened construction period due to continuous bad weather, and poor visibility remained.
Building a two-story residential shelter without heavy cranes and machinery was not feasible due to the terrain.
Continuous rainfall was a challenge by limiting concrete structures at high altitudes. This challenge was circumvented by using a fast-curing compound. The Indian Army has also started using some homegrown technologies suitable for Indian conditions, such as Ultra High Performance Cement (UHPC).
Any size UHPC plate can be cast in situ or precast, reducing overall construction time while providing greater portability and protection.
The use of 3D printing technology in collaboration with IIT-Guwahati is being explored to reduce construction time on site.

Bamboo has also been cleverly used in bum cleats. Bamboo reinforced concrete structures are ideal for building infrastructure in operation.
area. And because of its low cost and easy availability, it can be used effectively for rapid infrastructure development, especially in the northeastern states.
There are plans to further evolve the model post design and concept and replicate it along the front lines in many locations across all regions.
According to Army sources, the most important benefit of these garrisons is seen in improved morale and self-esteem for the troops, especially as China rapidly builds a modern military infrastructure along its northern border.
