Ahead of the 2022 United States Grand Prix in Austin, Arnett talks about his love for the show, F1, how his unique questioning style is being taken in the paddock and why he and his team are happy to be in the spotlight. talked about As the ‘clown’ of F1.

So Will, I remember hearing an episode of your podcast smart dress With Daniel Ricciardo – Was that episode the moment you made it public that you were a F1 fan?
Yeah, in many ways that’s how my F1 came out. Like many people, F1 was something out there and I didn’t pay much attention to it. ..that wasn’t covered much.

And over time, my smart dress Co-host Jason Bateman started speaking [Netflix show] drive to survivalWhen I started watching it, I got hooked. They have done a great job of explaining to the American audience the wonders of Formula 1. Because you get sucked into all the drama, not just the race, you have to watch qualifying, you have to watch everything.

So how was the conversation about making fast & loose come with an amp?
So they listened to Danny Ricardo smart dress, then when Amp decided they wanted to enter this space in F1, obviously they got two-time champion and legend Mika Hakkinen, then other sports like Katie Osborne and Michelle Beadle got a player. Can talk about sports, knows how to drive sports commentary, and Kid Mello. A way to make his F1 accessible to American audiences is to bring in someone who is a new fan and asks a lot of the questions casual fans and new fans will have and that would be great. .

The Amp show asks Mika a lot of questions. Why did they change tires at that point, why did Mercedes struggle, why is their car bumpier this year, why Lewis’ back hurt him, why did they make that move, why did they do the extra did you remove the wrap? All the things that many veteran F1 fans and pros know and take for granted, I don’t know! And I’m learning on the job. Hopefully, those listening will find it kind of learning with me.

How important Mika’s presence in the team is – he hits me like Mr. Miyagi in the group and he brings such trust…
When you tell Mika that he’s a world champion, he says “two-time world champion”! Of course he has credibility. And when discussing what happened after the race, Mika can speak about it from his experience, and when he starts talking, we all shut up. He’ll say, ‘When I was in Monaco in 1999, something like this happened,’ and knowing how difficult it is and having the experience of a man who has done it at the highest level and succeeded. It’s really, really cool.

He’s sort of the final word – we can all have opinions, but when it comes to asking what really happened, he’s like, no, no, no. this It happened.

What was the reaction in the paddock to your style of show? Because that’s different from how F1 is usually covered.
Interestingly, the people who move from race to race in F1 are a very closed and close-knit group. [Horner] Or some drivers, and I, you know, I’m new to this, so they don’t know anything about me, who I am and what I do. And they’re like, why is this guy asking the question, he’s not a normal guy from the BBC or European outlets, he’s this idiot American. I’m trying to be joking and lighthearted, but I don’t think they’re used to it.

But it was really nice, everyone was so welcoming. This is kind of a new approach to sports coverage. But everyone at Amp and Amazon has done a very good job of creating a really loose and fun team. We are not grizzled vets. We are here and really enjoying ourselves. I want people to have fun. I think we’re trying to bring that kind of energy to Formula 1 because there’s a lot of fun and it’s so great. We are clowns, if you will. This is fun.

“We are clowns – it’s fun”

Do you get starstruck?
yeah, not at all. Every time I see Toto Wolfe walking by, he’s so handsome and has an aura about him.Charles Leclerc has an aura.i know danny [Ricciardo] I love him a little bit, but I still have a lot of respect for him and what he does. He was so cool in Singapore that he took me to his garage and took his steering wheel off to show me what he was up to. It was very cool.even rand [Norris] I’m a little star-struck.

All these guys are 20 or 30 years younger than me, but I think what they’re doing is just amazing.

As a North American, how do you perceive the growth of F1 here?
It’s a small anecdote, but I felt that there was a change. I have more friends who say, “I’m recording the race and I want to watch it later, so please don’t tell me what happened.” It feels like there’s a lot more interest in sports than I ever remembered. ESPN has a big interest in it too, and I think Amazon’s involvement will change the game. We’re just getting started, but hopefully next year.

Finally, put your reputation on the line and choose who you think will be the 2023 World Champion…
You know, I love underdogs and comeback stories and with everything that happened last year, I think it would be really cool to meet Lewis [Hamilton] Come back again and take the reins back. It would make a great story.Max [Verstappen] He looks really invincible, we see that every week.

But I think there are a lot of dark horses out there and if Ferrari do well, I think Charles Leclerc will win. But like I said, Carlos Sainz is running very strong and he’s great. Rand is starting to peak at the right time, so it’s hard to say. But my prediction is that 2023 will be Charles Leclerc.
