Sioux Falls, South Dakota (KELO) – Jefferson High School in Sioux Falls has come a long way in just two years, including its ability to establish a successful sports and extra-curricular program.
Starting a new school can be a daunting task for anyone. But that didn’t stop the students and staff of Jefferson High School.
Jefferson High School principal Dan Conrad said:
Built two years ago, Jefferson is the newest school in the Sioux Falls School District.
“I was hesitant to come here at first because I built so many relationships and roots at Roosevelt High School, but there was also a hint of excitement fostered by something more than that. has nurtured into the school spirit that we have created here,” said Senior Andrew Nguyen.
“It felt like a great opportunity to start something from scratch and work with a group of future leaders to figure out what they want the building to look like,” said the chair of the English department. Gillian Thomas said.
It creates a unique opportunity for faculty, staff and students to come together and start something new.
“You’re creating that system or structure all the time. You’re creating it with the input of the students, the input of the staff, the input of the parents, and telling them what we really want,” Conrad said.
The school is made up of over 1,300 students from Roosevelt, Washington, Lincoln and New Tech.
“The advantage of being a new school, either athletically or academically, is that we’ve been able to bring together the best parts of all the schools and begin to define what Jefferson is,” said the social science director. Ed Whiting said. .
Staff at 20 different schools around South Dakota.
“A lot of us come from different schools, different backgrounds, different years of experience, and it’s really cool to come together and combine that to create something,” Thomas said.
Many of Jefferson’s programs and extracurricular activities were created by students such as Andrew Nguyen.
“Students were nervous about coming to Jefferson High School, coming to a new school, and meeting new people. I wanted to be able to have a place where I could explore my interests,” he said.
Leading the way for future students, says senior Alexis Gross.
“I’ve seen a lot of growth in the club, and a lot of people who weren’t involved in a lot of activities in their previous school are now involved in a lot of activities,” says senior Alexis. Gross said.
Now in their second year, Jefferson students and teachers say they are beginning to find their way with the Cavaliers.
“People are what really make Jefferson, Jefferson. They’re all so kind, helpful, involved and really genuine here,” said Senior Anya Bruter.
“It’s my second year, so it feels like there’s more community here. This is his second one for us, so it feels more real,” said Gross.
“The first year is still navigating uncharted territory. I have a background that I bring to new places, but this year I feel like that culture has really been embraced by staff and students, and people understand what I really understand what you’re doing. Make us Jefferson,” said Thomas.
And they see what’s next for students and schools.
“Look two years from now and you will see that there are so many activities and clubs, how the children are accepting each other, and how the staff are accepting each other. What can we do to help? Conrad said.
Jefferson High School will open in Fall 2021.
