Eric ten Hag has paid tribute to the Manchester United players who channeled the spirit of Fergie Time to end a turbulent few days in the best possible way. After watching him score the equalizer, we revisited the issue of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was not at Stamford Bridge but was on everyone’s mind.
Ten Hag were suspended after Ronaldo refused to come on as a late substitute and slammed into the touchline in Wednesday’s 2-0 home win over Tottenham. Ten Hag wants to hear Ronaldo’s reflections before inviting him to first-team training on Monday.
When asked after Ronaldo’s flashpoint how important it was to score points against Chelsea, Ten Hag said:
“But it has nothing to do with the incident [of Ronaldo] because [with that] Having the right culture, the right standards and values is more important. In the long run, it’s always more important and ultimately gets you in the right position.
“At this point you can fight back like we did, I’m happy. [in the Europa League] to win [in the last minute] And we did it here. When you show resilience when you’re down, it’s a very important thing for large teams to perform. That’s what Casemiro brings to this squad, this team.”
The opportunity was marred by homophobic chants from United’s enclosure, Ten Hag said they did not belong in the stadium. In a statement, the FA said: “The FA strongly condemns the use of the term ‘rent boy’ and is determined to ban it from our matches. , continues to work closely with the UK Prosecutor’s Office and the UK Football Police Unit.
“We are categorically against all forms of discrimination and strive to ensure that our games are a safe environment for all. We believe football is everyone’s game, and we use our influence to make meaningful contributions to our game so that it works for everyone. We will do everything in our power to drive change.”
In a statement, Chelsea said: “Chelsea Football Club considers all forms of discriminatory conduct completely unacceptable and condemns the language some individuals are using today at Stamford Bridge. We are proud to support Stonewall’s Rainbow Race campaign and today proves that more must be done to make football a game for everyone.”
United have lost Rafael Varane to a muscle injury. The defender walked off the edge of the pitch, clearly terrified of his chances of playing for France in the World Cup. He was abused by Chelsea’s support as he fought to control his emotions.
“When Valan comes out [of the game]that [the abuse] So did the Chelsea fans on the other side, so don’t do it,” Ten Hag said.
Ronaldo’s situation dominated the debate at Sky Sports Studios, with Gary Neville saying his old teammate had to leave United. I think I have to go to another place to play against him every week, so I think I’ll finish it this week or make a truce to go to the World Cup and then finish it because I have to finish it.”
United captain Bruno Fernandes said: “We’re not talking about it. We’ll keep it in. We have to deal with that inside and what we want, what we want. No one else needs to know what we are thinking. The most important thing for everyone, including Cristiano, is that the team wins.”
